Each Airworthiness Directive (AD) contains instructions on the actions necessary to resolve an unsafe condition on an aircraft. Sometimes those instructions are included in the AD itself; at other times, the instructions are contained in a design approval holder’s (aka Type Certificate Holder TCH) service information, which is incorporated by reference into the AD.

An Alternative Means of Compliance (AMOC) is an approval issued by the Minister or foreign approval accepted by the Minister pursuant to CAR 605.84(2) that provides alternative means to comply with an AD, where the proposed alternative will maintain the level of safety that is provided for by the compliance time, the modification, the restriction, the replacement, the special inspections or the procedure set out in the AD.

Aircraft owners/operators who desire to deviate from the mandated instructions as written, must propose an AMOC to Transport Canada for review.

This article will document the AMOC module of CAWIS
