System Overview

A Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) is a notice concerning the conditions or change in any aeronautical facility, service, procedure or hazard that can affect flight safety. Under the Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARS), the pilot-in-command of an aircraft must, before commencing a flight, be familiar with the available information that is appropriate to the flight, including reviewing relevant NOTAMs.

NOTAMS resided on the ETMS/AFTN terminal that was once housed in what is now called AVOPS (Aviation Operations Centre) on a local computer. (previously CACO)

The supporting software, Gandacar ran the AFTN (Aeronautical Fixed Terminal Network) / ETMS (Enhanced Traffic Monitoring System) where TC would get daily NOTAM data dumps from NAV Canada which was forwarded to inspectors for review.

The system and processes were decommissioned circa 2016/2017 as the cost/benefit ratio of upgrading the defunct software was deemed cost prohibitive for the value it brought to the department. The party responsible for reviewing the NOTAMS (ANS – Air Navigation Services) from a regulatory stand point developed a new process for obtaining these directly from NAV Canada at little to no cost.

Good To Know

NOTAMS are now published by NAVCAN then forwarded to TC
