Description

The 2015 Canadian Federal Election (formally the 42nd Canadian general election) was held on October 19, 2015 to elect members to the House of Commons of the 42nd Canadian Parliament.

2015 Electoral Map is a join between the 2015 federal Electoral Result and 2015 Federal Electoral Map boundary.

Originator

  1. Election Canada

  2. Canada Open Data

Use Cases

  1. As a Transport Canada analyst, I need to create a map that overlays federal electoral districts with the locations of OPP projects. I need to create an infographic that shows that OPP projects are being funded in a non-partisan manner.

Remarks

  1. ArcGIS Living Atlas is more desirable for EGIS integration as no join operation is required for the FED with the election result. However, if elected candidate is critical for analytic purposes, the by-election result will need to be updated using filter to extract records to be changed and insert updated values against the original dataset.

Process for EGIS integration

ESRI REST, WMS, SHP and GDB Files:

  1. ESRI REST, WMS, SHP and GDB files can be integrated directly into EGIS.

Joining SHP & CSV:

  1. In FME, use the Feature Merger transformer to join Open Data SHP file with Election Result CSV file using Federal Electoral District (FED) or FED Number as primary key.

  2. Output to KML, SHP or GDB as required.

  3. Import into EGIS

TC Smart Maps:

  1. Not all GIS applications can consume KML file directly due to its unique data structures such as networklinks, folders, models etc.

  2. Please contact Lawrence Chong, Digital Services Directorate for TC Smart Maps KML dataset and format translation.

  3. TC Smart Maps KML link: \\tc.gc.ca\tcgis\GISData\Google Mashup\ElectoralMap\ElectoralMaps.kml

Customization:

  1. Schema transformation: As required

  2. Denormalization: Not required

  3. Value coding: Not required

  4. Attribute renaming: As required to improve readability

  5. Attribute removal: It is highly recommended as some fields are unnecessary, this will also reduce file size and improve performance

  6. Geoenrichment: Feature symbolization is recommended to improve visualization
    -Color theme by Elected Party

  7. Format translation: As needed

  8. Language translation: French version available.
