MVP, Part 2

Watch the finished video: MVP Part 2

Introduction

This is a continuation of MVP, Part 1 where we showed that the EGIS MVP contains the top 7 prioritized features according to the working group feedback. Today we'll continue to showcase how the EGIS MVP provides the functionality deemed important by the working group, according to EGIS-priorities.pdf

Demonstration

Add items (as content)

It's easy to add your own content to EGIS. You can add files from your own computer in a number of formats list , or services from around the web.

From your computer

  • Content, from the top menu

  • Add item

    • From my computer

  • Select H:\Documents\MVP-Vids\Part2\data\sample_pt.gdb.zip

  • Choose FGDB as a the file format

Or, from the web

  • Find data online

  • Copy the link for the service

  • Content, from the top menu

  • Add item

    • From the web

    • Paste your URL

  • The platform supports ESRI, KML, and most OGC formats

Done

  • Functionality available

Apply security to data, map layers, web maps, and apps

By default, content you create or add to the EGIS platform is only viewable by you. See DataSharingModel.pdf. Once the content is available online you are in control, and can -- based on your permissions -- share your content with groups you're a member of, or the whole TC organization. This was demonstrated in MVP, Part 1.

As a technology, the EGIS platform is secure by default.

  • Functionality available

Change the way data is styled

  • Open a new map

  • Add layer Census Division 2016

  • Choose the layer, select Change style

  • Choose attribute PRNAME

  • Choose drawing style Types (Unique symbols)

  • Select Options

It's easy to change the fill and border colour, and the transparency of polygons. You can also change the icon style of points, or even produce a heatmap:

  • Add, Search for layers

  • Find RailOcc_All_Eng_Layer

  • Choose the layer, select Change style

  • Choose attribute INJURIES

  • Choose drawing style Heatmap

Done

  • Functionality available

Publish layers from existing items

There are many ways to create new content from existing content, such as the results of analysis.

  • Add, Search for layers

  • Find Small Craft Harbours

  • Choose Analysis

  • Choose Manage data

  • Choose Merge layer

  • Choose Core and non-core fishing

  • Change results name to Small Craft Harbours-Merged

  • Run analysis

  • Added to map, show table has both types of harbour

  • See it exist in 'my content'

Done

  • Functionality available

Save data as map layers and web maps

For this we'll upload a csv containing spatial information, create a Feature Layer, and save a web map of the result. We'll assume we have a flat file from some 3rd party system that provides coordinate information. Steps:

  • Content, from the top menu

  • Add item

    • From my computer

  • Select H:\Documents\MVP-Vids\Part2\data\RailOccExtract.csv

  • Accept the defaults, and note that we'll locate features by Coordinates

  • Scroll down to show the field mapping to lat and lon

  • Add Item

Once the new feature layer is made, open it in the map viewer

  • Clean any extra layers

  • Change base map

  • Save as

  • Give a title, tags, and description

  • Find in content

Done

  • Functionality available

Organize content into groups

As we've seen a few times already when sharing data, groups exist in the EGIS platform as a way to organize your data and collaborate with your colleagues. If we don't take this requirement so literally, there are a few other ways of grouping your data.

First, you can keep your own content organized by storing them in their own folders:

  • Create a folder, 'Project A'

  • Add some content to it

Second, you can categorize your content when you add it to EGIS using our standard categories:

  • Add some content

  • Pick a category.

  • Show content listed by category

Finally, when adding content you must add at least one tag. These provide yet another avenue to group your data

  • Functionality available

Edit data

There are a number of ways to edit data, and two options were listed in the MoSCoW priorities questionnaire: editing data generally, and editing data on the web. I'll note that data can be edited via desktop GIS software and published to the EGIS platform. Or, if a data service is editable, then desktop software can use that service as a data source and edit as well. While I'll note this is possible, I'll focus on editing data via the web in this presentation.

  • Functionality available

Edit data on the web?

  • Open a new map

  • Add content

    • Search for Railroad Inspections

  • Click Edit from the toolbar

  • Click a type of feature to add, in this case Yes or No

  • Click on the map where the feature should go

  • Fill out attribution for the feature

  • Click close

Depending on the security settings of the layer, you may be able to update or delete these features.

  • Click Edit from the toolbar

  • Click on an existing feature

  • Change the attribute values as desired

  • Click close

Or

  • Click Edit from the toolbar

  • Click on an existing feature

  • Click Delete

Coming up

MVP, Part 3 will continue this demonstration and show the following features:

  • Convert location info to XY (geocode)

  • Analyze data

  • Create dynamic data views as layers

  • Create web mapping applications from web maps

  • Use the built-in site builder to create custom landing pages

Not coming up

In the interest of time and interest some functionality will not be shown. Note that this functionality does exist in the platform. These functions are:

  • The EGIS platform supports fine grained user and permission management

  • App licensing

  • platform-to-platform federation

  • 3D visualizations, Geo-alerts, and turn-by-turn directions were only could-have's
