Ferry Routes

Description

Ferries are operated across the country and are not limited to provinces and territories with large lakes or lengths of shoreline. Ferries are an integral part of the transportation system for many coastal cities and islands across the country, with many provinces operating ferries as an important component of their highway networks.

In some cases, ferries operate between provinces, and in the case of the Marine Atlantic Inc. route between Port-aux-Basques, NL, and North Sydney, NS, provide a constitutionally-mandated service.

Filter ferry route from National Road Network dataset

Remarks

  1. The most appropriate dataset to use for EGIS would be from WMS Service as it does not require periodic updates.

Process for EGIS integration

WMS Service:

  1. This web service can be integrated directly into EGIS.

  2. This is a complete National Road Network dataset, to extract ferry route, filter by FERRYSEG.

SHP File:

  1. SHP file can be integrated directly into EGIS.

  2. This is a complete National Road Network dataset group by province, ONLY FERRYSEG.shp FILES NEED TO BE PROCESSED.

TC Smart Maps:

  1. Not all GIS applications can consume KML file directly due to its unique data structures such as networklinks, folders, models etc.

  2. Please contact Lawrence Chong, Digital Services Directorate for TC Smart Maps KML dataset and format translation.

  3. TC Smart Maps KML link: \\tc.gc.ca\tcgis\GISData\Google Mashup\NationalRoadNetwork\FerryRoute\FerryRoute.kmz

Customization:

  1. Schema transformation: As required

  2. Denormalization: Not required

  3. Value coding: Not required

  4. Attribute renaming: As required to improve readability

  5. Attribute removal: It is highly recommended as some fields are unnecessary, this will also reduce file size and improve performance

  6. Geoenrichment: Feature symbolization is recommended to improve visualization

  7. Format translation: Not required

  8. Language translation: French version available

  9. Update frequency: As identified
