Scenarios
I utilize TC Smart Maps primarily in support of my duties related to federal real property. This includes assessment, research, verification and validation of federal real property (both TC and Other Government Departments).
Primarily my focus is with respect to airports and air navigation lands/facilities/structures and surrounding lands, however, I also respond to third parties inquires/correspondence received in the region whereby the only information provided is often just a legal description or a street address. I often utilize street view in this process to locate structures, etc. surrounding the property.
I also utilize features such street view and historical imagery to go back in time to determine what has occurred (i.e. what structures or other items (i.e. squatters/debris, etc.) that may be located on the site at certain times/what has been removed, etc.) thru the years on various parcels of land.
When dealing with airports – I utilize mapping that shows property boundaries, 3-D imagery of structures (i.e. buildings, towers, Nav Aids) and zoning information. Street view is utilized and I have also viewed inside of airport buildings
The First Nation lands tool is used frequently for reference purposes.
In addition, maps are compiled/edited on an ad hoc basis for reference, consultation and stakeholder engagement.
Benefit / Outcome
In the past, I had access to a regional web-based GIS application. Although I utilized this system on a limited basis it was complicated and cumbersome and as such I did not use. If I required information I would just ask the Technical Data Support for assistance.
When TC Smart Maps was released, it was a game changer and continues to transform with each new addition. It is an amazing tool, user-friendly and allows me to work smarter and more efficiently – simple and nothing complicated. I simply just need to type in a legal description, and it takes me to the exact location required. I could now navigate myself to conduct the necessary research. It is indeed a far superior product than any other system currently available within TC.
Prior to development of the TC Smart Maps, Lawrence Chong spent a lot of time listening to the needs and wants of the end users. No one wanted something that would be too complicated. With the understanding of what end users required, he combined the amazing imagery and mapping capabilities of Google Earth with specific data sets and TC Smart Maps was born. It is an incredible tool that I now use on a monthly, weekly and often daily basis. TC Smart Maps is time-saving, and includes the most up-to-date and readily available information. It is also extremely cost effective to the Department. Unless the system that is being developed performs in the same manner as TC Smart Maps – it is doubtful that I would utilize it.
